Rules for premier Grand Cru Wines
Premier Grand Cru wines are made with traditional grape varieties: Chasselas, Pinot Noir, Gamay.
The rules for their production are strict: respect for the environment, minimum density 6000 vines/hectare, vines must be at least 7 years old.
The yield is limited and may not exceed 0.8 litres/m2 for Chasselas and 0.64 litres/m2 for Pinot Noir and Gamay.
Grapes are picked entirely by hand and meticulously sorted, so that only the best grapes are used.
Minimum sugar contents are 75° Oe for Chasselas, 80° Oe for Gamay and 85° Oe for Pinot Noir.
Candidates for the Premier Grand Cru appellation are selected by a committee of experts based on blind tastings of five vintages per decade.
- The appellation Premier Grand Cru certifies that 100% of grapes used originate from the same soil.
Premier Grand Cru wines are exceptional vintages with an ageing potential of at least ten years.
- When all the above criteria are in place, the wine can be presented to the Premier Grand Cru Committee which has the power to grant this prestigious appellation.
- Approval of every vintage must be confirmed by an inspection of the vineyard and an additional tasting to verify compliance.
